iPhone Hasselblad – viewing the analog through the digital

This is a digital image of the analog film camera I use for black & white photography. It’s a Hasselblad 501CM. It was made in Sweden. It’s heavy in my hands. There are no batteries, chips or meters. It’s metal, glass, and film.

It is a medium format camera, which means larger negatives, more information and more detail using analog technology perfected since before World War II. These cameras have been taken into space and used by NASA.

I like both worlds.

Digital allows you to rapid-fire fifty frames to capture the one. Analog requires you to pause and think before releasing the shutter.

Digital is easier. It is quick and transparent — great for blogging and work. Analog introduces uncertainty. It demands time, effort and forethought.

Digital, if you make a mistake, sometimes Photoshop gives second chances. Analog is a commitment. When you press the shutter, it tells no lies.

A digital image is intangible, viewed on a glowing computer screen, and at-risk for instant loss. Analog photographs are real. They are physical, something you can hold and touch and keep forever.

I find the analog world far more satisfying. And I share it with you now through the digital.

Years ago, I learned photography with black and white film from photographers who devoted countless hours perfecting their craft. The sense of accomplishment was exhilarating to watch a print come to life in a tray of developer. Digital imagery came along and I learned that, too. Now, I’m going back to B+W film. I’ve made a darkroom in my basement where I can create and perfect the craft. Film has a quality that digital cannot duplicate and digital is, well, it’s so digital! I want analog, something tangible, something I can create and hold, not a photoshop-action-layer-covered image viewed on a tiny screen! And yes, I am aware that all the photographs in this particular post were made with my iPhone, it’s much easier that way.

Suzanne and I were enjoying Sunday morning coffee and we noticed over a dozen beautiful birds in my backyard. I managed to get a few photos and Suzanne did google research and learned the birds are Western Tanagers. What a great Sunday morning!
